In Memoriam - Chip Reese

Op 4 december jongstleden is drievoudig bracelet winnaar David 'Chip' Reese overleden. Reese overleed op de jonge leeftijd van 56 jaar in zijn slaap.

Reese ging naar Las Vegas toe om af te studeren aan de Stanford Business School in de herfst. Maar in de zomer van dat jaar won Reese in een toernooi maar liefst $40.000 en bouwde zijn bankroll verder uit naar $100.000. Hij is nooit meer naar school geweest. Toen hij op een avond $10-$20 Stud speelde, zag Chip de grote spelers zoals Doyle Brunson en Johnny Moss hi-low split spelen. Chip Reese: "I was playing in my game but I was watching them and they were playing terribly." Hij vond het interessant genoeg om $15.000 van zijn bankroll eraan te wagen, wat best short is in een $400-$800 game.

Omdat nog niemand hem kende kon hij veel chips oppakken en aan het einde van een lang weekend had hij een bankroll van $400.000. Hij ging daarna hold'em spelen en zoals zoveel jonge spelers (hij was toen 23) begon hij ook aan Ace-seven en Razz, alhoewel hij dat nog nooit had gespeeld. Hij is daardoor diverse malen broke geraakt, maar omdat hij zich kon meten met de besten ter wereld bouwde hij altijd weer snel een bankroll op. Hij werd een regular in de 'Big Game' van het Bellagio!

In 1978 won hij zijn eerste bracelet in het Seven Card Stud Spit event. In 1982 pakte hij zijn 2e bracelet in het $5.000 Seven Card Stud Event. Doyle Brunson noemde hem in zijn boek Super System de beste Seven Card stud player waar hij ooit mee gespeeld had. De meest aansprekende bracelet pakte hij in 2006, tijdens het $50.000 H.O.R.S.E. event. Het was voor het eerst dat dit toernooi op het programma stond en het was de ultieme test voor de grote spelers: wie is de beste allrounder. Deze bracelet spreekt bij veel spelers meer tot de verbeelding dan die van het Main Event. De headsup tussen Reese en Andy Bloch duurde maar liefst 7 uur en 286 handen en Reese won zijn derde en laatste bracelet naast $1.700.000 prijzengeld.

In 1991 werd hij als jongste speler ooit toegevoegd aan de Poker Hall of Fame. Zijn 'life time winnings' in toernooipoker komen op $2.900.000, maar hij verdiende vele malen meer geld aan sportsbetting. Als member van de 'Computer Group', één van de meest succesvolle syndicaten ooit, verdiende hij miljoenen dollars!

Chip Reese was probably the most successful poker player in history. He was also the youngest player ever inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. For years, most players considered Chip to be the best all-around poker player and by winning the inaugural $50,000 buy-in HORSE tournament at the 2006 WSOP, he cemented that status. Chip has always been admired by players for his success, his demeanor at the table, and that he never steamed or went on tilt. When you mention poker 'greats', put Chip Reese on the top of the list."

Doyle Brunson:
"I have lost one of my oldest and dearest friends today," aldus Doyle Brunson. "He was one of the most unique individuals I have ever known, and poker has lost one of the greats today. We went to look for the Titanic. We went to look for Noah's Ark. We were two of the biggest suckers whenever it came to business, but we both had poker to fall back on. Thank God we could play, so we always survived."

"I have lost a mentor and friend today. He was like a family member to me."

With the utmost sadness and shock I learned this morning that my buddy Chip Reese is no longer among us. The world just got poorer today with the loss of Chip Reese. Although it is almost impossible for me to understand, Chip died last night after a sudden case of pneumonia. What makes it even harder to sink in is the fact that I just talked to him last night around 7 PM. Chip was not only a world class poker player but also a world class individual and I am proud to call him my friend. Chip was the kind of gambler we should all strive to be.

Chip's experience, good spirit and integrity made him the best ambassador for the game and I am certain that the whole poker community will miss him greatly. I, for one, will miss the fierce competition, our friendship and his guidance off and on the poker table. Chip was extremely gifted and very well respected in the poker world as well as in the business world. His list of achievements is endless with his 2006 WSOP HORSE win as the latest proof of his excellent poker skills.

My thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Chip's family to whom he was always devoted as a father and a father figure. Although it is little consolation, it is my hope that they know of the great legacy that Chip is leaving behind.

Toen Chip Reese ooit gevraagd werd of hij misschien wel overwoog om te stoppen met poker zei hij: "I'll stop playing at my funeral, and only God knows what I'll do after that."
Chip Reese laat een zoon Casey (18) een dochter Taylor (16) en een stiefdochter Britney achter. Vrij recent is hij gescheiden van zijn vrouw. Aanstaande vrijdag is de begrafenis in Las Vegas.
