Nieuwe pokerscholen en een ontslagen A.J. Benza

De finale tafel van de WSOP: Een droom voor iedere pokerspeler. Om die droom een handje te helpen start de WSOP op 6 november een speciale November Nine versie van haar poker academy. De lessen zullen plaatsvinden van 6 tot en met 8 november in Caesars Palace. In deze drie dagen zullen spelers als Mark Seif, Greg Raymer en Phil Hellmuth de deelnemers klaar stomen voor een succesvolle pokercarrière.

De deelnemers zullen door middel van colleges, hand demonstraties en een deep-stack toernooi de fijne kneepjes van het vak leren. De professionals die in november voor de klas staan zijn enthousiast over de opzet: "I'm so excited to get back in the classroom to share my experience and knowledge with the attendees," aldus Phil Hellmuth, 11-voudig bracelet winnaar en Main Event kampioen.

Brandon Rosen van de WSOP Academy geeft aan dat het overweldigend succes van eerdere demonstraties tijdens de WSOP tot deze opzet heeft geleid. Tijdens de WSOP van 2009 werden de live hand-demonstraties drukbezocht en overspoelt met enthousiaste en positieve reacties. Brandon Rosen is dan ook erg te spreken over de ideeën voor de November Nine Academy:

"Our attendees tell us time and time again that they benefit tremendously from the time spent at the poker tables and playing out hands as they would in a real poker tournament. Learning by doing is the approach. This is why the November Nine Academy has more than six hours of live hand demonstration time."

Ook Mike Matusow start pokerschool

Professionals lijken tegenwoordig te staan springen om beginnende pokerspelers het spelletje te leren. Ook Mike "The Mouth" Matusow springt in op deze trend. Hij gaat aan het werk voor de DeepStacks University. Gisteren ging de beta-versie online, een voorproefje van wat de beste poker trainingsite op het web moet worden. Met instructeurs als Adam "Roothlus" Levy, Michael Binger, TJ Cloutier en Mike Matusow timmert de site in ieder geval hard aan de weg.

High Stakes Poker stuurt A.J. Benza de laan uit

Na een aantal seizoenen aan de zijde van Gabe Kaplan te hebben gestaan lijkt voor A.J. Benza het einde in zicht. Voor het zesde seizoen van High Stakes Poker wil de productie de co-host vervangen door een vrouwelijk persoon. Dit tot grote woede van A.J. Benza, die uithaalt op zijn persoonlijke blog.

"Last week, I had a conference call with a couple suits at GSN about the possibility of dropping me for a chick to work with Gabe Kaplan. (Sounds sexy already, but...).
I flat out told the guys who will remain unamed - oh screw it was Bary Nugent and David Shiff - that if you got the best pizza in town for 5 seasons, why try and add licorice to it? I also told them I am the guy who does my own publicity for the show because GSN has NEVER set up not even as much as a radio interview for me. So I scour internet poker sites and make myself available and - voila! - instant publicity."

"I spoke to both Schiff and Nugent and I asked them if they were fathers. They jubilantly said they were. So surely they would know the hardships of losing a top-rated gig while raising little children in the process. (Oh and did I mention that I have a son who is a Freshman in college, So armed with my track record on giving GSN 5 seasons of a No. 1 rated show,I decided to hit them in the spot where it's supposed to make a father go mush.
I said...."Let's talk man-to-man and father-to-father." They said,"Absolutely."
I unashamedly told those two guys that if I dont get my gig back....."your basically putting a man and his family on the street. Is that what you want on your concience?"
