Selbst boos op Mercier na dronken weddenschap die haar $1,8 miljoen kan kosten nu Mercier opnieuw finaletafel haalt
Na eerder deze week zijn 1e bracelet van de zomer (en 4e overall) te hebben gewonnen, is Jason Mercier nu alweer in de gelegenheid om voor zijn 2e deze WSOP te gaan, want hij heeft de finaletafel bereikt van het $10.000 Razz event als chipleader. De $273.338 die in het verschiet ligt voor de winnaar zal Mercier ongetwijfeld motiveren, maar de grote side-bets die hij heeft op het winnen van bracelets zullen een nog grotere drijfveer vormen waarschijnlijk.
Vanessa Selbst is een van de spelers die morgen de finaletafel op de voet zullen gaan volgen. Selbst sloot een weddenschap van 180 tegen 1 af dat Mercier geen 3 bracelets zou winnen deze zomer. Nadat Mercier de eerste won, kwam naar buiten dat Selbst graag wilde uitkopen, en hetzelfde had geprobeerd nog voor de WSOP was begonnen, omdat de oorspronkelijke bet tijdens een dronken avond was gesloten. Had Selbst voor de eerste bracelet nog voor $1.000 willen uitkopen, na Mercier's overwinning bood ze $100.000 aan haar PokerStars teamgenoot. Beide keren kreeg ze nul op rekest bij Mercier.
Gister schreven we al over deze weddenschap in Tweet Tweet Bad Beat, maar nu heeft de discussie een wending genomen. Selbst schreef er op haar twitter namelijk het volgende over:
"I'm going to write a longer blog on this sometime but for now I just want to clear up what went down on these bets since there is a lot of confusion and 140 characters is difficult.
Day 1: I get really drunk with Dzmitry and make a bad dumb bet.
Day 2: I am filled with regret about said bet
Day 3: I get really drunk and decide that the way to alliate my anxiety about the first bet is to book more action since it's almost impossible multiple people win the bet. Not the best logic I realize after the fact.
Day 4: I explain situation and ask Jason to cancel then buy out for 1k. We stop talking pretty quickly when he seems uninterested.
Today: I explain to Jason how I was disappointed he didn't let me buyout ir cancel earlier. I offer a generous buyout amount (100k) and he refuses.
I'm not calling Jason evil; I'm saying expected him to be more compassionate towards me given the nature of the bet and situation. He didn't, and that was unfortunately how he chose to handle it. Multiple people can attest that I refused their action at 18--1 in the following months, and Jason is a better player than them. I said as much.
I chose not to publicize this bet because I wasn't proud of it nor did I want to even think about it. I unfortunately made the Dzmitry bet in front of pres so that become public instantaneously. Only Jason mentioned this bet before WSOP; never me. So to everyone saying it's just sour grapes: obviously.
Obviously IDGAF if he doesn't win a bracelet. And it's better if the story never came out. But now that it's relevant I just thought the story mattered. Those are my thoughts. I don't want to belabor any of this and I'm not looking for sympathy, I just thought it mattered.
